02 Plan and ride right

Trail etiquette

Many Ozark trails are shared. Huckleberry Mountain started as a horse trail; Brock Creek and Chadwick share with horses or mountain bikes.

Sharing the trail

  • Expect horses, hikers and bikes on multi-use trails, and slow down around them. Leave No Trace asks visitors to yield and be considerate of others.
  • Respect the rights of others, as Tread Lightly puts it, including nearby landowners. St. Joe marks its boundary to buffer neighbors.
  • Leave gates as you found them.

In camp and staging areas

  • Ride slow: parks and St. Joe post low speed limits in staging and camp areas.
  • Recreational riding in national forest campgrounds is prohibited; ride only in and out.
  • Keep noise down. St. Joe sets a noise limit for vehicles.

Ride sober

St. Joe and the private parks prohibit alcohol on the trails or in the riding area.

Riding in a group

  • Keep the vehicle behind you in sight at turns.
  • Stop well clear of the trail.
  • Agree on hand signals and what to do if someone breaks down.
